Ningaloo Reef Location is about 1200 kilometres north of Perth in Western Australia. Home of the Whale Sharks plus many other amazing marine life.
The reef is a fringing reef and comes right up to the shore making it an excellent location for snorkeling. Recently the West Australian government announced Ningaloo Reef in its entirety would be a marine park and its marine life would be protected for divers and snorklers to enjoy. The most incredible snorkeling on the Ningaloo reef is with giant whale sharks. Whale sharks are the worlds largest fish and visit the Ningaloo Reef annually to feed. They are one of ‘the big three’ that make an annual migration to the waters of the Ningaloo Reef- whale sharks, manta rays and humpback whales. You don’t have to be a scuba diver to see a whale shark, they swim right at the surface so snorkeling is fine. Manta Rays are also feeding at the surface and snorkeling amongst manta rays is also possible and is a common bonus on Ningaloo Reef Whale Shark tours. It is illegal to go snorkeling or scuba diving with humpback whales.

Ningaloo Reef meets the beach of the North West Cape. It is a virtually untouched barrier reef of 260km length protecting a shallow, brilliant white sandy lagoon of clear tropical waters. One of the rare places on earth where you are able to walk from the beach straight onto a coral reef. More than 500 species of tropical fish and 220 species of coral make up the Ningaloo Reef; a protected marine park. With the sea only up in your knees, allow the many coloured fish to swim and feed between your legs. From eighteen months to eighty years of age enjoy the thrill of snorkeling amid the dazzling display of tropical species and colours of fish and coral in the shallows ‘like swimming through the stars’.

Exmouth is on the Eastern side of the North West Cape and the Ningaloo Reef runs along the western side. A vehicle is required to reach the reef and, although there is excellent snorkeling off the shore, taking an eco tour allows access to the Ningaloo reef’s most pristine coral and snorkeling sites. Certified scuba divers can also dive on most Ningaloo Eco tours and it is common for divers to have manta rays join them during the dive or even whales pass over head, singing their whale song!
The world’s oceans cover 70% of the Earth’s surface and contain more life than all on land combined. Even if you travelled to every country and visited every game park and zoo in the world, you have only seen 3/10ths of Earth and the minority of its creatures. Places like the Exmouth Navy Pier await you- enrol in an open water course and come and see the rest of the world!

The whale sharks do migrate to Exmouth and the Ningaloo Reef annually and to swim with one is up there with jumping out of a plane and snowboarding on your very own mountain- it is UNREAL! They are a threatened species and the average recorded length of the individuals is declining- possibly due to fishing industries further north. Ningaloo is the only place in the world where the sightings are frequent enough to allow around six boats to take twenty passengers each per day for four months straight and virtually be guaranteed to swim with the largest fish in the world. Scientists know very little about the life and biology of whale sharks, they are a huge mystery.
